Growing in an Urban Landscape
Hello Flower Friends, Petal Pals, and Blooming Buddies! After years of contemplation, this is my first blog post. I finally realized I should just post about how I am doing this micro urban farm thing. So please join me on a journey through the seasons as I share the strategies that make my little urban flower farm thrive in a space just under 1/4 of an acre. Each blog post will unveil a key practice or share some of my insights, stories, and tips.
This initial post serves as an a introduction to the next series of posts where I will dive into the art and science of urban flower farming - and believe me it is both an art and a science. To help me stay focused amid the bulb-planting frenzy happening right now, I am including a sneak peak at some upcoming posts.
Blossoms Year-Round: Strategic Perennial and Woody Plant Use will explore the beauty of year-round blooms and foliage by strategically incorporating perennials and woody plants like hellebores, forsythia, and more into my urban landscape.
Floral Symphony: Intentional Perennial Interplanting will demonstrate how I maximize each available square inch of dirt by interplanting perennials, allowing my urban flower farm to be a dynamic and ever-changing masterpiece.
Blooms without Borders: Smart Succession Planting of Annuals will uncover the secrets of continuous blooms through smart succession planting, reducing the need to cover crop and ensuring near-seamless transition from one bloom to the next.
Timely Elegance: Strategic Reliance on Tulips and Lilies will delve into the world of timed elegance as we explore the pivotal role of tulips and lilies - grown in crates - in bringing scheduled bursts of beauty to my urban flower farm.
Come with me on this floral journey. I can’t wait to celebrate what can blossom in the coziest of urban spaces. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers to the many petals ahead!
